Folding Hill Orchard Block Pinot Noir 2013
Folding Hill has quickly become one of my favourite Central Otago producers, they only make Pinot Noir and the focus on producing hand-crafted wines from small parcels of fruit results in outstanding wines.
With vineyards located in Bendigo, Central Otago the vines are "low cropped, the fruit is hand picked when optimaly ripe" and vinified with as little intervention as possible the attention to detail and adherence to "time-honoured traditions and methods".
This approach to winemaking lets the fruit shine in the wine and while this is an intense wine, packed with juicy dark berry fruits flavours it also has incredible power, structure and elegance. While the black cherry fruit flavours leap to the forefront it is the smoky oak, obvious dark chocolate flavours, delicate floral herbal notes, ultra-fine tannin structure and juicy acidity in the finish that make this wine something very special. Sealed with a diam cork the wine will cellar magnificently for 5-8 years from the date of tasting.
We expect beautifully fruity Pinot Noirs from Central Otago and while this delivers that fruitiness it is the layers of complexity and restrained power that make this a five star wine.
